Recipe 77: Dark Chocolate Heart Cutouts

Miss me? We’ll just pretend that 21 month gap didn’t exist. Let’s just call this season 4 of Nate Makes Cookies.

In today’s episode, Nate finds himself in his first house and beautiful new kitchen. Guest star: Brittany (sister).

How sweet.

I made Brittany help me because we all know how I feel about rolling out dough.

Step 1: Gather ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, baking powder, salt, egg, brown sugar, butter (not pictured).

This countertop serves as a nice backdrop!

Step 2: Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder

It’s been almost 2 years, but it’s like riding a bike!

Step 3: In a double-boiler, melt chocolate and butter

Step 4: Make your assistant stir it

Since these cookies were love-themed, I turned my Hue lights to pink.

That…doesn’t look great.

Apparently Brittany doesn’t agree. Sick, Brittany.

Step 5: Transfer to the mixer.

Thaaaaaat’s better.

Step 6: Mix in the egg

Step 7: Add dry ingredients

Step 8: Split dough in half. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness

This actually went okay.

Step 9: Use parchment paper on both sides, stack and chill. Go shopping.

Step 10: Remove from fridge

Do I look unhappy? I AM! They stuck together!

img_3424

What the hell?! It’s hard as a rock and won’t come off the paper or separate from the layer below!

img_3425

And it broke. OMG I seriously hate rolling and chilling dough. I DID NOT PUT IT IN THE FREEZER.

Step 11: Break your stupid dough into 1,000 mini pieces. img_3427

Step 12: Morph back into a ball, roll, then cut.

If Brittany wasn’t there, I might not have finished. Or I might have just baked a giant dough.

Step 13: Bake

What’s that little turd in the middle of the left pan? Well…

Have I mentioned that my sister is a cake decorator? She used the last of the dough to make a emoji

They came out looking pretty good. They tasted okay. Pretty plain.

Yields: 42
I got: 44

Start time: 4:11
End time: 7:17 (3 hours, 6 mins)
Martha’s estimated time: 1 hour (I did go shopping for a bit, but WHAT)

What did I learn?

  • I think these would be better if they were dipped in chocolate too.
  • I still don’t have patience for rolling dough. Maybe I need to go to YouTube for meditation videos.
  • It was a good idea to have an assistant for my first time back.

What do I need to learn?

  • Do they offer classes on rolling dough? I’m guessing that will double as a form of anger management.

Hopefully you’ll be seeing a lot of me soon! I’m ready to bake regularly again!
